Catharina Joubert: Reclaiming Culture as an Expat & Badass Body Image Through Pole Dance

Hello, lovely humans!

I am so excited to share this conversation with Catharina Joubert, a creative nomad who has traveled the globe as a foreign language expert and Teach First ambassador in several countries, including Japan, France and England. Throughout her travels, she’s built an extensive toolkit of how to entertain, engage and teach all at the same time. Her passion has also come alive through pole dancing and arts and music reporting. She founded Creators Abroad -- formerly known as Regeneration Studio -- to build bridges between people, professions, cultures, and countries, interviewing creatives about the jobs they quit, the transformation they desire, and how they're making it happen. Now, it’s become a podcast production agency ready to take on the world.

Pull Quotes:
“The moment you open your mouth and people suspect you aren’t one of them… they treat you differently. And there’s no basis for it. You’re just as human as they are.”

“We love labels. It helps us understand the world and organize our world. Like a drawer with your pajamas, your underwear. You’ve got your hierarchy of what’s important for you, what’s more important, how you interact. And the moment somebody moves from one drawer to another, they’re seen differently.”

“You don’t actually have to be bound by those labels. Then, some people are scared shitless by that because suddenly you’re telling them that the world they know can be different.”

“It’s okay to be scared, but don’t let it control everything you do.”

“It’s been a learning journey. You need to be very honest with yourself when you start a creative business. Don’t get caught up in just creating because it feels great, but acknowledge the value and ask: Where can you improve?”

“Don’t allow anyone to tell you what to do with your body. Stand up for who you are, what you believe in and what you want to do.”
